AA launches Municipal Solid Waste Charging Pilot

23  February  2018

The Airport Authority (AA) is preparing for the introduction of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Charging in Hong Kong in 2019. As the charge will adopt the "polluter pays" principle, it is important for the airport community to be well-prepared for the new legislation.

The AA is helping to prepare the airport community by rolling out the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) MSW charging pilot scheme. The scheme aims to trial three MSW charging approaches and identify the most practical and cost-effective approach for the airport, and assist the tenants to measure their waste quantity and estimate the future MSW charge. The first phase runs from January to April 2018 at the Departures West Hall, with the participation of over 30 cleaning contractors, catering, retail and office tenants, simulating real-life scenarios covered by the MSW charging scheme.
