Two pilot schemes enhance marine ecology

The Airport Authority (AA) deployed 100 artificial reef (AR) units in waters to the west of HKIA’s south runway. The ARs are placed near the future North Lantau Marine Park and serve as a pilot scheme to provide micro-marine habitats for enhancing the marine ecology and fisheries resources.  The AA is also implementing another pilot study to deploy oyster reefs at selected locations on the Three-Runway System’s newly formed seawall, which aims to recreate a natural shellfish habitat that promotes the proliferation of shellfish and other marine life. The AA is monitoring the effectiveness of these two pilot schemes over the next 12 months.
