Recognitions for 3RS Project’s sustainable construction

15  December  2020

The Airport Authority (AA) received two accolades in the Construction Industry Council’s Sustainable Construction Award in November for its excellence in management of the three-runway system (3RS) reclamation project at Hong Kong International Airport. In particular, AA received a Silver Award under the Organisations Category and an Excellent Award under the Industry Practitioners Category for its 3RS Deep Cement Mixing (DCM) works.

The 3RS reclamation project involves forming 650 hectares of land at north of the existing airport island, of which 40% is located on contaminated mud pits (CMPs). AA introduced the use of the DCM method as the environmentally preferred solution for ground improvement in the CMP areas. DCM has also been used outside the CMP areas and proven as a reliable sustainable construction technique. DCM has now been established as the new, non-dredged ground improvement method used for reclamation works in Hong Kong.
