Over HK$13 millions granted to support Marine Ecology and Fishers Projects

19  September  2022

The Marine Ecology Enhancement Fund (MEEF) and Fisheries Enhancement Fund (FEF) recently granted over HK$13 million to 12 projects over a 12-month period from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.

All funded projects are managed and conducted by universities, research organisations and fisheries industry associations. About HK$4.8 million from the MEEF has been granted to seven projects engaged in various areas of study, such as repurposing shellfish shells, examining the density of Chinese white dolphins using unmanned aerial vehicles, researching the reproductive biology of octocorals, enhancing marine biodiversity on artificial sea walls, and more. About HK$8.5 million from FEF has been granted to five projects, including developing a sustainable farming system for tropical sea cucumbers, studying the antioxidant function of pearl oysters, and optimising occupational safety and health of local fishermen.

With the aim of enhancing ecology and fisheries resources, the MEEF and FEF were set up in late 2016 as conditions of the Environmental Permit for the expansion of Hong Kong International Airport into a Three-Runway System.
