Expanding a greener Terminal 2

15  March  2021

The Terminal 2 (T2) Expansion Works of the Three-Runway System project at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has achieved Provisional Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings Version 1.2, the highest rating under the green buildings assessment scheme.

A combination of passive design strategies and low-energy active design techniques have been incorporated into the design of the project. High energy-performance glazing, wall and roof materials on the facades will provide improved thermal isolation. In addition, photovoltaic panels will be installed as part of the roof design to offset energy consumption.

The T2 Expansion project has also incorporated other green design features. For instance, it will reuse structures of the existing building as far as practicable. To save water, the project will use low-flow sanitary fittings and a water leakage detection system. Moreover, greenery has been optimised while taking into account the need to control any increased risk of bird hazard. Design measures have also been incorporated to address indoor environmental quality, such as using low-emitting materials for improved indoor air quality.
