Efforts to reduce use of single-use plastics applauded

30  June  2023

Airport Authority (AA) received the gold award in the “over 35 million passengers per annum” category of the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2023. An award ceremony was held during the 18th ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly, Conference & Exhibition in May.

The award recognises AA’s multi-pronged efforts in driving the reduction of single-use plastics (SUPs) at HKIA. Water Zones with hot and cold water refilling stations are available at convenient locations in the passenger terminals to encourage a reduction in the use of SUP water bottles. To facilitate recycling of SUPs and other recyclables from airport tenants, AA also implemented a range of supporting initiatives, including the revamp of refuse rooms in AA facilities, and provision of regular training to tenants to help raise their awareness on recycling and waste separation.

In addition, AA Executive Director, Finance Julian Lee shared HKIA’s sustainable finance journey at the event. Committed to being one of the greenest airports in the world, AA has issued up to US$2 billion of green bonds to date and they are all constituent securities of the Bloomberg MSCI Green Bond Index. Proceeds from the green bonds are used to finance eligible projects under AA’s Sustainable Finance Framework.
