Green Airports Recognition 2022

31  May  2022

The Airport Authority (AA) received the Platinum award, which is the highest accolade, in the “over 50 million passengers per annum” category of the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2022.

The award recognises Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)’s outstanding project that demonstrates best practice in carbon management, namely the Weather Forecast for Air-conditioning Control System (Weather FACTS) project, which enables more efficient energy use at the airport. Weather FACTS collects hourly data such as passenger flow and weather conditions including air temperature, solar radiation, cloud amount and wind speed. Using big data analytics, the system then forecasts the terminal’s cooling demand for the following 24 hours and adjusts the air conditioning accordingly. The project is a collaboration between AA, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited and the Hong Kong Observatory. HKIA is the first airport to adopt this predictive control model for an air conditioning system.
