Preparing for extreme weather with smart monitoring

As extreme weather events become more frequent, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has strengthened its stormwater management to prevent rising rainfall from posing operational risks.

Currently, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has installed more than 50 smart Internet of Things sensors to its stormwater management system at HKIA. These sensors continuously monitor rainfall, tidal conditions and water levels, with the information integrated into a Geographic Information System that allows responding team to have a complete visualisation of the system and its performance. It also enables them to pre-empt and respond to emerging risks more effectively and efficiently.

By leveraging digital technology to improve preparedness and response, AAHK further enhances HKIA’s climate resilience and minimising disruptions to airport operations under extreme weather conditions.
