Top honour for climate change adaptation

28  May  2026

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)’s Flood Resilience Studies was honoured with a Platinum award at the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Green Airports Recognition 2026 in the “over 40 million passengers per annum” category. This highest accolade recognises HKIA’s efforts in climate change adaptation and its robust approach in managing flood risks in response to its coastal location and the rising impacts of climate change.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) undertook extensive Seawall and Drainage Studies for the entire airport island. The two studies incorporated worst-case climate scenarios which aligned with those of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and sophisticated hydrodynamic modelling to assess HKIA’s resilience to flood risks. The studies not only confirmed that HKIA’s existing infrastructure is resilient until at least mid-century and operational at the end of the century with adaptation measures in place, but also enabled more effective flood management strategies for HKIA.
