On 6 June, National Fish Releasing Day, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) released 60,000 fish fry and one million shrimp fry into the waters near Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), helping to enhance the marine biodiversity in nearby waters.
The release took place at the HKIA Approach Areas where vessel access is limited and 600 artificial reefs have been deployed by AAHK. All 60,000 released fish fry were native species with declining populations. This included 10,000 crescent sweetlips that were locally bred at a Sai Kung fish farm, one of the projects funded by AAHK’s Fisheries Enhancement Fund—marking the first use of locally bred fish for release. This helps enhance the biodiversity and fisheries resources of these waters. In the future, AAHK plans to continue this conservation effort with additional releases to further support the region’s fisheries resources.
