Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA)’s Renewable Diesel (RD) Pilot Project has been honoured with the Gold Award in the “over 38 million passengers per annum” category at the Airports Council International (ACI)’s Green Airports Recognition 2025. Organised by the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, the award recognises airports with outstanding performance in environmental protection. The presentation ceremony was held in New Delhi, India, on 16 April.
The award recognised HKIA's contribution in reducing airport ground emissions through its pioneering use of RD on ground services equipment (GSE). In April 2024, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) collaborated with Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited and Shell Hong Kong Limited to launch the RD Pilot Project, making HKIA the first airport in Asia to adopt RD on GSE. Compared to petroleum diesel, RD enables greenhouse gas emissions reduction by up to 87%.
Eight airport business partners have also planned or implemented an RD pilot in their own operations. An HKIA RD Working Group has been established to enable business partners to share their experiences in procuring and using RD, facilitating the exchange of best practices. AAHK will continue to promote the use of RD, with the goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by the end of 2050.
