(Hong Kong, 14 May 2026, 1830hrs) – Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) today conducted a full-scale trial at Terminal 2 (T2) in preparation for the commissioning of its new departure facilities scheduled for 27 May 2026. More than 1,100 participants from around 30 organisations took part in the exercise, including Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), three local airlines that will operate at T2, ground handlers, government departments, Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO) and other relevant stakeholders.

The full-scale trial simulated the entire end-to-end passenger departure process at T2, including arrival at T2 by Airport Express trains, airport bus, cross-boundary transport and private cars; using self bag drop facilities or airline check-in counters; passing through e-Security Gates into the restricted area; undergoing security screening; completing immigration procedures; as well as proceeding to e-Boarding Gates via the Automated People Mover. Airport staff taking part in the trial role-played as passengers and provided feedback with their user experience and observations.

Steven Yiu, Executive Director, Airport Operations of AAHK, said, “This trial is the largest conducted prior to the commissioning of the T2 departure facilities. The purpose is to familiarise business partners with the layout, facilities, and passenger departure processes of the new terminal. I am pleased to see that, during the trial and the whole preparation for the commissioning of the new T2, the airport community has demonstrated strong professionalism and commitment as ever to ensuring excellence in passenger service. The trial was completed smoothly, assuring that HKIA is ready to welcome the first batch of passengers departing from T2 on 27 May.”

Upon commissioning, the departure facilities at T2 are expected to handle around eight million passenger trips in its first 12 months of operation. Starting on 27 May, 15 airlines primarily operating regional routes, including the three home-based carriers: HK Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines and Greater Bay Airlines, will relocate their departures check-in service to T2 in different batches. The target is to complete the relocation of all 15 airlines to T2 by mid-June 2026, catering for the demand during the summer peak travel season.
