(HONG KONG, 25 July 2025, 1800hrs) – Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Arts and Culture Festival 2025 officially kicked off today. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) in partnership with local arts organisations present a series of art exhibitions at the terminal until 8 November, and eight days of stage performances from today.
In collaboration with Attacca Projects, Hong Chi Association, Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong Reminiscence & Maison V, Ink and the City, M+ and MobArt Gallery, the Festival showcases a diverse range of art forms.
In the centre of the Arrivals Hall, the rich tradition of applied Chinese calligraphy in Hong Kong is showcased through display of a wide array of exhibits including graphics of neon lights, signboards, movie posters, advertisements, name cards, as well as visual experience enabled by technologies. Visitors may also make postcards as souvenirs by using specially designed calligraphy stamps.
The airport’s giant screen at the Arrivals Hall features digital artwork created by different artists, including an animation that celebrates the joy of travelling and Hong Kong’s vibrancy, as well as paintings by intellectually disabled artists from Hong Chi Association that had been displayed in Art Basel Hong Kong.
In the Departures Hall, a section of public seating is transformed into an engaging art installation that not only continues to provide seats but also invites visitors to immerse in the setting inspired by the “Aeroplane Chess” that has been popular across different generations of Hong Kong residents.
To celebrate the 100 years of civil aviation development in Hong Kong, the Festival presents a photo exhibition that traces the airport’s development from the Kai Tak era to Chek Lap Kok, with scene transitions designed to evoke the iconic split-flap flight information displays at Kai Tak.
Today’s opening ceremony for the festival began with a live music rendition, by world-renowned pianist Niu Niu and harmonicist CY Leo. A series of stage performances run until 2 August, showcasing a diverse range of programmes by talented artists at the terminal. These include dance and music performance by local artists with disabilities; local acapella ensemble; dance performance by local dance group; youth orchestra and choir as well as classical, jazz and rock music presented by orchestras, harpists and bands. Travellers from around the world are welcomed by different stage performances as soon as they step into Hong Kong.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK, said, “Since we launched the inaugural HKIA Arts & Culture Festival in 2015, the event has grown to become a special platform for leading figures and emerging voices in Hong Kong. Together, we have redefined the airport as a place with a distinct identity where aviation meets imagination. In addition to activities in Terminal 1, cultural experiences will be further enriched with the phased opening of the expanded Terminal 2 starting this September.”
