Typhoon Wipha as Hong Kong International Airport Flight Operations Resume in an Orderly Manner

2025/07/20

(Hong Kong, 20 July 2025, 2030hrs) – As Typhoon Wipha is moving away from Hong Kong gradually, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has been working closely with airlines, relevant government departments and other business partners for the orderly resumption of flight operation, as the Airport Emergency Centre continues to operate.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has activated the Flight Rescheduling Control System to coordinate the orderly recovery of flights today. For the whole day of 20 July, HKIA handled 400 flights, and the gradual arrival and departure of a large number of passenger is expected.

AAHK has maintained close communication with MTR Corporation. Airport Express service has resumed at 1800hrs. AAHK will liaise with the MTR Corporation on the extension of service hours, based on the flight arrivals.

During the storm, the Queue Ticket System for taxis has been operating smoothly, facilitating passengers to obtain queue numbers via ticket machines or mobile app. Under this arrangement, passengers would not need to stand in the queue waiting for taxis. AAHK will continue to work with the Transport Department, and taxi associations to increase the number of taxis and divert passengers arriving in Hong Kong as quickly as possible.

A temporary rest area has been set up in the terminal, providing 500 chairs, mobile charging stations and other facilities. The Passenger Care Team has also been deployed at the terminal, distributing supplies to passengers such as dry foodstuffs, bottled water and blankets. Restaurants and convenience stores at HKIA have extended their operating hours and stocked up extra food and beverages.

AAHK has communicated with the Civil Aviation Department and airlines on handling flights overnight, deploying additional staff to handle passengers’ departures. All 27 departure security gates will be fully operational to serve passengers overnight. As weather remains unstable, the entire flight resumption process is expected to continue until tomorrow (Monday) evening.

AAHK advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information, and proceed to the airport only when their seats and flight time have been confirmed. Passengers can check HKIA’s website, or “My HKG” mobile app for latest flight information.
