(Hong Kong, 19 July 2025, 1900hrs) – As Tropical Cyclone Wipha approaches Hong Kong, flight operations at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) are expected to be affected. Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has activated the Airport Emergency Centre and is coordinating closely with various companies and organisations of the airport community to implement contingency measures.
As Wipha intensifies, AAHK expects significant flight cancellations or delays on 20 July. The Flight Rescheduling Control System has been activated to manage flight operations. AAHK will continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain ongoing communication with airlines and the Civil Aviation Department.
AAHK advises passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information and proceed to the airport only when their seats and flight time are confirmed. Passengers may also visit HKIA’s website or make use of the “My HKG” mobile app for checking latest flight information.
Under adverse weather conditions, land transport services to and from the airport may be suspended or limited. When the No. 9 signal or above is hoisted, passengers should stay in the terminal to ensure safety. A temporary rest area for passengers will be set up in the terminal, equipped with 500 chairs, mobile charging stations, and additional amenities. Extra staff, including the Passenger Care Team, will be deployed to provide assistance to passengers and distribute essential supplies such as bottled water, snacks and blankets. A number of restaurants and convenience stores at HKIA will continue to operate during the typhoon, with some opening 24 hours.
Following the issuance of No. 8 gale or storm signal, AAHK will activate the Queue Ticket System for taxis. The system enables passengers to receive queue numbers via ticket kiosks or a mobile application, without having to wait in line for taxis.
To maintain adequate staffing for airport operations and passenger services, AAHK has established two staff rest centres with a capacity for over 400 employees.
