Airport Authority Announces Air Traffic Figures for November

Hong Kong International Airport receives “the Best Airport in China” Award by Business Traveller.

(HONG KONG, 15 December 2019) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today announced the traffic figures for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for November 2019. During the month, HKIA handled 5 million passengers, representing a year-on-year decrease of 16.2%. Flight movements dropped 8.3% to 32,510 compared to the same month last year. Cargo throughput fell 3.4% year on year to 450,000 tonnes.

During November, transfer/ transit traffic showed strong year-on-year growth of 6% while Hong Kong resident travel increased 5%. Passenger volume continued to be affected by weak visitor traffic, with passengers to and from the Mainland and Southeast Asia experiencing the most significant decreases.

While overall cargo exports recorded 1% decline year on year, cargo exported to Japan and Europe saw positive growths among key trading regions.

Over the first 11 months of the year, HKIA handled 65.8million passengers and 385,730 flight movements, representing year-on-year decreases of 3.4% and 1.3%, respectively. Cargo throughput fell 6.6% to 4.4 million tonnes compared to the same period last year.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume and flight movements saw declines of 3% and 1% to 72.4 million and 422,835, respectively. Cargo throughout dropped to 4.8 million, a 6.4% decrease compared to the same period last year.

As the festive season is near, HKIA’s Terminal has been adorned with Christmas decorations, with a series of activities scheduled to provide a joyous atmosphere at the airport. Starting from 21 December, various locations throughout the terminal will host dance and a cappella performances by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Santa Claus will also meet and greet passengers for photo opportunities.

Meanwhile, HKIA was voted by the readers of Business Traveller as the Best Airport in China for the 15th annual Business Traveller China awards. Vivian Cheung, Executive Director, Airport Operations of the AA, said, “HKIA has won the award 12 times in 13 years, a strong recognition of the collaborative efforts of the airport community. HKIA will continue to enhance our global air traffic network and multimodal connections with the Mainland to help bring business opportunities and economic benefits to Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.”
