Smooth Operation at HKIA with over 1,000 flights movements for the Whole Day

2019/08/14

(HONG KONG, 14 August, 2019, 2330hrs)  –  Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) operated smoothly today, with over 1,000 flights handled for the whole day after implementing flight rescheduling. Normal flight movement operation will resume on Thursday, 15 August.

Pursuant to Section 9 of the Airport Authority Bylaw, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) implemented access control at the terminal buildings starting from 1400hrs today.

The AA will adjust the arrangement of access control according to operational circumstances and will issue further notices if needed.  On Thursday, Car Park 1 and 4 will not be closed as planned earlier, and will stay open for public use.

The AA reiterates that its primary responsibility is to ensure the smooth operation of the airport and the safety of passengers and airport staff. The AA condemns the several violent incidents happened at the airport on Tuesday and sends regards to those wounded.

Nearly 1,000 flights were cancelled during the five consecutive days since last Friday (from 9 August to 13 August), including 412 flights which were cancelled on Monday, accounting for more than 30% of the total number of flights for the day. The AA regrets that participants of the public assemblies had caused serious disruption to airport and flights operations, while seeking understanding of affected passengers. The AA would like to thank all airport staff for continuing to perform their duties professionally in the past few days.

Meanwhile AA has obtained an interim injunction to restrain persons from unlawfully and willfully obstructing or interfering with the proper use of HKIA. A Protest Area that AA may consider for allowing lawful assembly at the terminal building is shown in the interim injunction order, but the AA emphasises that it is not a standing designated area for assembly. Application for any assembly proposed to be held at the terminal building must be made in advance and a Letter of No Objection from the Police has to be obtained.
