(HONG KONG, 10 June 2016)  –  Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) and the Labour Department today jointly launched the "Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Career Expo 2016". Held in its fifth year in a row, the three-day event at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre promotes more than 3,000 job opportunities offered by around 40 companies from the airport community.

An opening ceremony was officiated by Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, Secretary for Labour and Welfare; Yau Shing-mu, Acting Secretary for Transport and Housing; and C K Ng, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the AA.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Cheung said that HKIA, being an international and regional transport hub, not only propelled the growth of Hong Kong’s economy, business and trade, but also contributed significantly to Hong Kong’s geographical advantages and played an important role in the labour market of Hong Kong. Better transport connection resulting from infrastructure projects such as the Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link, plus the establishment of employers networks around the airport island would bring more job opportunities, Mr Cheung said. He added that the Labour Department would continue to adopt a multi-pronged approach to strengthen employment services, such as by using the Tung Chung Job Centre as a base to facilitate cooperation with local corporations or organisations to promote employment for residents within the district.

Mr Yau said: “Hong Kong, being a global aviation hub, has vast development potential and been pooling for talent. The Government accords high priority to the training of talents in the aviation sector. A HK$100 million Maritime and Aviation Training Fund has been set up to help young people enhance their professional knowledge. Also, the AA will establish a civil aviation academy to nurture local and regional aviation management talent.  I encourage young people interested in the aviation sector to keep an eye on these schemes and market developments, so as to lay a better foundation for their career development.”

The positions offered at the Expo cover a wide range of jobs at the airport, including cabin services, aircraft maintenance, air cargo, airport security, cleaning, baggage handling, retail sales, technical posts, engineering, catering, property management and more.

Mr Ng said, “The aviation industry is an important contributor to local economic development. Currently, there are around 73,000 people working at the airport, providing income to thousands of families, as well as supporting the four pillar industries of Hong Kong. With increasing demand for aviation services in the long run, there will be more job opportunities that require different skill levels in various aspects of airport operations, including engineering, technology and management. The aviation industry definitely provides bright career prospects.”

During the Expo, participating companies will organise career talks providing latest information about the aviation industry, as well as career advice for job seekers. A featured talk will also be given by Ruby Lam, a former TV news anchor currently working in the communications field on overcoming challenges in career development.
