(HONG KONG, 29 February 2016)  –  Jack So Chak-kwong, Chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) and Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the AA, introduced the airport’s daily operations and contingency measures to Stephen Lo Wai-chung, Commissioner of Police, who visited Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) today. They also visited the recently launched Midfield Concourse (MFC).

Mr So said, “Safety and security are the top priorities in airport operations. The AA has always maintained close cooperation with the Hong Kong Police Force and other government departments. We also work hand in hand with a number of business partners to ensure the safety of all airport users and the smooth operation of our airport.”

Mr Lo was given a behind-the-scenes tour of HKIA’s security screening facilities by AA management. The group also visited the Integrated Airport Centre, as well as the MFC, which commenced operation at the end of 2015.

Mr Lo noted, “Hong Kong Police Force attaches great emphasis to the security of the airport and other critical infrastructure in Hong Kong, and is prepared with well-trained operational units and contingency plans to handle different kinds of emergencies. Through today’s visit, I look forward to strengthening the cooperation between the Force and HKIA in the areas of airport security and contingency response.”

Mr So added, “The MFC has been operating smoothly since launch, and it currently handles around 200 departure and arrival flights per day. When it operates in full capacity in March, it will handle approximately 20% of HKIA’s passenger flights.”

The MFC is located to the west of Terminal 1 and between the two existing runways. The 105,000-square-metre five-storey concourse provides 20 parking stands and connects with Terminal 1 via an extension of the Automated People Mover system.
