Roving Exhibition Introduces Future Airport Development

(Hong Kong, 21 May 2015) － Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) will host a roving exhibition at four different locations across Hong Kong over May and June. Under the theme of “Our Airport Our Future”, the exhibition will introduce the future development of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), launching tomorrow with its first four-day debut at Discovery Park in Tsuen Wan.

The roving exhibition will introduce HKIA’s medium and long-term development plans, including the ongoing Midfield Development and the planned Three-runway System (3RS). Videos will be shown to introduce the layout of the 3RS, including the third runway, new runway concourse, automated people mover and baggage handling system, with an aim to enhance public understanding of the project. The AA always strives to promote environmental protection, and the exhibition will also highlight the AA’s ongoing efforts in carbon reduction, energy saving, waste management and application of environmentally friendly design in airport terminals and facilities.

HKIA is one of the busiest passenger airports in the world, and has also been the world’s busiest cargo airport for the past five years. The airport generates enormous economic contribution for Hong Kong, supporting the city’s four economic pillars and providing more than 65,000 direct jobs. Last year, HKIA handled 63.3 million passengers, 4.38 million tonnes of cargo and 391 000 flight movements. The airport is now running under two-runway system which has a practical maximum capacity of 420,000 aircraft movements per year, meaning that HKIA is fast approaching its maximum handling capacity. There is a pressing need to expand the airport to meet long-term aviation demand.
