AA welcomes Board appointments

(HONG KONG, 26 May 2005) - The Airport Authority (AA) today welcomed the appointment of five new members to the Authority's Board.

AA Chairman Dr Victor Fung, who has been reappointed for three years, thanked outgoing Board Members Miss Maria Tam Wai-chu, Dr Peter Wong King-keung, the Hon Selina Chow Liang Shuk-yee, Mr Daniel Fung and Mr John Strickland for their contribution over the previous years.

"On behalf of the AA, we extend our sincere thanks to these outgoing Board Members for their valuable contributions at a crucial period in the development of our airport, during which time this world-class airport won numerous global accolades. Major business projects have been embarked upon and we have made inroads in extending our home market to the Mainland, including concluding an agreement to make an equity investment and to participate in the management of the Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport," he said. 

Dr Fung added that fellow Board Members and the AA Management welcome the incoming Members, and look forward to working closely together to meet the challenges of the Authority's next stage of development.

Appointments to Airport Authority

The Government announced today (May 26) the appointment of five new members and the re-appointment of the Chairman and six other incumbent members of the Airport Authority for three years with effect from June 1, 2005.

The five new members are the Hon Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, the Hon Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, the Hon Vincent Fang Kang, Mr Wilfred Wong Ying-wai and Ir Edmund Leung Kwong-ho.

Dr Victor Fung Kwok-king has been re-appointed as the Chairman of the Airport Authority while Dr Lo Ka-shui, Mr Marvin Cheung Kin-tung, Mr He Guangbei, the Secretary for Economic Development and Labour, the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, and the Director-General of Civil Aviation have been re-appointed as members of the authority.

"Under the leadership of Dr Victor Fung and the hard work of Airport Authority Board Members and the management, the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has successfully overcome many unprecedented challenges to the aviation industry, such as the 911 event in 2001 and SARS in 2003, and at the same time achieved record growth in both passenger and cargo throughput year after year," a government spokesman said. "The performance of HKIA is fully recognised internationally as it has earned international acclaim, including the 'Airport of the Year' title five years in a row by Skytrax, an international customer survey on airport performance.  

"The Government is most grateful for the invaluable contribution to the work of the Airport Authority by five retiring members, Miss Maria Tam Wai-chu, Dr Peter Wong King-keung, the Hon Selina Chow Liang Shuk-yee, Mr Daniel Fung and Mr John Strickland.  They witnessed the growth and success of HKIA and many of HKIA's achievements would not be possible without their hard work and contribution."

Under the Airport Authority Ordinance, the chairman and other members of the authority are appointed by the Chief Executive.
