Direct flights between Hong Kong and Yangon launched

(HONG KONG, 12 December 2003) - Myanmar Airways International (MAI) today launched its twice weekly direct flight service between Hong Kong and the Myanmar capital of Yangon. A total of 158 passengers were on board Flight 8M237 when it arrived at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at 12.45pm today, having originated from Yangon at 7.45am. Flight 8M238 departed HKIA at 1.45pm with 99 passengers and arrived in Yangon at 3.45pm. The flying time is approximately 3 hours 15 minutes. There is a one-and-a-half hour time difference between the two cities. Flights operate on Mondays and Fridays. The airline uses a combination of Boeing B737-800 and Boeing MD82 aircraft for the service. Airport Authority Commercial Director Mr Hans Bakker said: ”We extend a warm welcome to Myanmar Airways International. Myanmar is one of the largest countries in South East Asia and the launch of the direct flights will further enhance Hong Kong status as a regional aviation hub. It is important that HKIA maintains a lead in international connectivity.” At present more than 70 airlines operates at HKIA serving more than 140 destinations. MAI Managing Director Mr Gerard de Vaz said: “Hong Kong is one of the key travel markets in the Asian region, being an important hub for both business and leisure travellers.
