(HONG KONG, 29 September, 2003) - SkyPier started operation today, providing a fast and reliable sea link between Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and four ports in the Pearl River Delta.
Ferries made 38 trips, shuttling more than 300 passengers between HKIA and Shekou, Shenzhen, Macau and Humen in Dongguan.
The first service arrived from Shekou at 8:30 am and passengers were whisked to HKIA in a matter of minutes for their onward flights, without having to go through immigration and customs again.
Businessman Mr Susumu Ito was one of the first passengers. He left his home in Shekou about 6.30 am and was at SkyPier in two hours, cutting his travelling time by almost half.
Mr Abe Hiroshi was thrilled. Travelling with his wife and child, he was very happy they were not required to go through formalities here. Mr Shen Shui Shu, who arrived from Taipei, said the unique route would save a lot of time on his frequent returns to Shenzhen.
Passengers arriving by air can go to the ticket booths before Immigration Hall to buy ferry tickets for the four ports in PRD.
AA’s General Manager, Terminal, Mr Eric Wong, said the first day of operation of SkyPier was smooth. “With the support of various government departments such as Customs and Excise and Immigration, AVSECO and participating airlines, the innovative service was launched smoothly.” He said AA would continue to improve facilities and passenger flow with the help of business partners.
Initially 20 airlines provide check-in service at the SkyPier and more are gradually added.
Passengers departing from the Pearl River Delta ports are advised to contact ferry operators for the ferry schedule, flight schedule and the list of participating airlines. Enquiry numbers at the four ferry terminals are:
