(HONG KONG, 12 November 2002) - Arriving passengers at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will be greeted by a dazzling display of technology, information and entertainment following the installation of a giant LED video monitor spanning the main entry to the Arrivals Hall.
Standing 5.12 metres wide and 3.84 metres tall, the high-resolution screen is the largest indoor LED screen in Hong Kong, and will provide arriving visitors with timely information on tourist attractions, cultural exhibition news, weather, transportation information, locations of key airport facilities, Hong Kong SkyMart shopping offers, and other useful information.
Airport Authority (AA) Chief Executive Officer Dr David J Pang officially unveiled the LED today in a colourful ceremony that was followed by a contemporary Chinese dance. Guest of Honour was Mrs Selina Chow, an AA Board Member and Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, which is providing enticing footage of Hong Kong's many attractions. Dr Pang also thanked Lighthouse Technologies Ltd for providing the LED screen.
Dr Pang said it was important to remember that passengers' visits to Hong Kong began at HKIA: "From the moment he arrives, we hope to help make his stay a hassle-free, enjoyable and memorable experience. That means providing good facilities, service and information."
The installation of the LED screen was well timed, Dr Pang said, noting that passenger growth had rebounded strongly in October - almost 18 per cent compared with last October, exceeding AA's forecasts.
"The number of visitors arriving by air from the Mainland, in particular, has shown significant growth," he said. "The trend is also reflected by the 22 new weekly frequencies being added to the Airport's Winter Flight Schedule. But let me assure you that we will continue to maintain our high service standards as we meet this increasing demand."
