AA reminds passengers of security measures

2002/02/08

(HONG KONG, 8 February 2002) - The Airport Authority (AA) today reminded passengers to comply with enhanced security measures at Hong Kong International Airport to avoid unnecessary delays during the expected busy Lunar New Year holidays.

Passengers must not carry knives, knife-like objects or bladed items such as household cutlery, cutters, scissors, razor blades, nail clippers or files in their carry-on luggage. Instead, they should put those items in their check-in bags.

Items classified as dangerous goods such as insecticides, dyes and fire extinguishers are not allowed on board, either as carry-on or check-in baggage.

Each passenger is allowed to carry only one lighter, regardless of whether it is fueled or empty. Under no circumstances can lighters be placed in check-in bags.

At the security checking areas after Immigration, passengers are given plastic bags to put all their metallic items, such as mobile phone, keys, coins and lighter, inside for x-ray screening in a bid to speed up the security process.

Passengers are also advised to allow plenty of time for check-in as the enhanced security screening process, in place since September, 2001, may take slightly longer time than before.

In addition, some airlines such as US carriers require additional security measures. Passengers should be aware of the extra time required for check-in. Again, passengers should consult with their airlines or visit their websites before leaving for the airport.
