Hong Kong International Airport operates smoothly over Easter peak period

2000/04/22

(Hong Kong, 22 April 2000) - Operations at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) maintained high standards during the peak Easter travel period, the Airport Authority (AA) said today.

HKIA handled a total of 592 flights on Easter Friday, a record for the airport so far this year. Passengers passing through the airport totalled 109,108 during the day.

All passengers were able to check in their baggage within 30 minutes, while hand-baggage were screened within 5 minutes. As regards Immigration, nearly all passengers waited no more than 15 minutes for Immigration as well as Customs clearance.

Car park ultilisation has been orderly following the AA's initiative to streamline its car parking measures on 15 April using Car Park 2 and 3 only for hourly parking. Due to high holiday demands, the AA has opened a temporary car park, and is providing shuttle buses to ferry passengers between the temporary car park and the terminal building.

"We have expected additional traffic for this extended holiday period, and we have put in place additional resources and staff to ensure smooth services for airport users," said Acting Airport Management Director Howard Eng, adding that an additional 15% of staff have been deployed during the said period.

Mr Eng said the next peak period would be Easter Monday with a total of 578 flights expected, including 130 additional flights.
