Heritage Meets Modernity: Tong Lau & Shikumen Take Centre Stage

Inspired by Hong Kong’s Tong Lau and Shanghai’s Shikumen, the immersive installation reimagines two distinctive heritage building types within a contemporary airport setting. Once central to everyday urban life, Tong Lau and Shikumen reflect the resilience, density and cultural character of their respective cities. Through a stylised streetscape of covered walkways, courtyards and architectural details, the project invites travellers to experience the layered memories of Hong Kong and Shanghai in a concise yet evocative journey.

Conceived with reference to the creative vision of Gary Chang, architectural/interior designer and founder of EDGE Design Institute Ltd., the installation applies a contemporary design approach to heritage interpretation. Rather than presenting architecture as static history, it highlights how familiar urban forms can be reimagined, connected and experienced anew, offering visitors a cultural first impression that bridges architectural heritage, city identity and modern creativity.
