HKIA First in Asia’s to Use Renewable Diesel on Ground Services Equipment

12  April  2024

Airport Authority (AA) launched a renewable diesel pilot project on 12 April 2024 as part of its unwavering commitment to developing Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) into the World’s Greenest Airport. The pilot project was launched in collaboration with Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (HACTL) and Shell Hong Kong Limited as a key decarbonisation initiative. Through collaborative efforts, the pilot implementation signifies HKIA as the first airport in Asia to utilise renewable diesel and HACTL as the first cargo terminal in Asia to adopt renewable diesel for ground services equipment.

The renewable diesel being piloted is a drop-in fuel that is fully compatible with diesel engines used in equipment such as tractors and apron sweepers. Compared to petroleum diesel, this renewable alternative can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 87%.

HACTL runs the pilot project with sponsorship by the HKIA Greenovation Fund. Established by AAHK in 2022, the Fund aims to provide financial support to business partners who have joined AAHK’s Net Zero Carbon pledge in 2021, to explore and pilot new carbon reduction technologies to accelerate the decarbonisation process at the airport.
