Future fish stocks enhanced

15  October  2023

The health of our oceans is a critical part of environmental conservation, and the Airport Authority (AA) is continuing to play its part with the second phase of its fish restocking pilot programme. Part of the AA’s voluntary projects under the Marine Ecology and Fisheries Enhancement Strategy, the initiative involved releasing fish fingerlings in Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Approach Area waters to boost fisheries resources around North Lantau.

Following the success of first phase in 2019, the current phase of the programme included the release of approximately 20,000 fish fingerings at the pilot artificial reef site, and about 1,000,000 shrimp fry in southwest Lantau waters. The released fish will be monitored using acoustic monitoring, remote underwater videos and underwater visual censuses over a six-month period to assess the effectiveness of fish restocking.
