Carbon reduction top of the agenda

15  June  2023

Held on 6 June, the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Carbon Management Senior Executive Roundtable Luncheon saw representatives from Airport Authority (AA) and 29 key aviation business partners, who participate in the HKIA 2050 Net Zero Carbon Pledge, exchange their latest carbon reduction strategies and initiatives.

In his welcome remarks, AA CEO Fred Lam expressed that mitigating climate change risks is critical to strengthening the resilience of airport operations. While traffic at HKIA continues to recover from the pandemic, he urged attendees to remain focused on achieving the midpoint target of the net zero pledge – that is to cut 55% carbon emissions by 2035 – by bolstering collaborations and actively exploring opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint of new and existing business activities.

During the event, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan also delivered a keynote speech outlining decarbonisation strategies for the Hong Kong Government to achieve its carbon neutrality target by 2050. Following this, Business Environment Council CEO Simon Ng shared actions for businesses to move towards net zero carbon emissions, such as setting science-based targets and creating a climate transition action plan.
