Airport Authority Publishes Sustainability Report 2015/16

2016/10/28

(HONG KONG, 28 October 2016)  –  Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today published its Sustainability Report 2015/16. Titled “Building Our Shared Future”, the report covers the AA’s sustainability commitments, performance and ongoing measures contributing to the sustainable development of Hong Kong in the fiscal year ending 31 March 2016.

AA Chairman Jack So said, “The AA is committed to operating and developing Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) as a world-class airport which contributes to the economic and social development of Hong Kong. In managing our airport, we have remained focused on upholding high service standards and operational excellence, while being responsible to our people, the community and the environment.”

The report consists of two major sections, highlighting airport growth, economic contribution, people and the community, operational excellence, and the environment. The “Big Picture” summarises the AA’s approach, key achievements and initiatives, while the “Thematic Areas” detail the AA’s efforts in managing the sustainability issues of most importance to the authority and its stakeholders, including progress achieved, targets and future plans.

In preparing the report, the AA conducted an extensive stakeholder engagement exercise to discuss specific topics and identify solutions with key stakeholders, including employees, airport business partners, suppliers and contractors, non-governmental organisations, community groups, and for the first time, academics and young people.

Highlights of the AA’s sustainability initiatives and achievements in the 2015/16 fiscal year include:

•  The Midfield Concourse entered full operation in March 2016.  It was designed to the highest levels of environmental sustainability and service standards, and marked an important milestone in enhancing HKIA’s passenger handling capacity.

•  On the environmental front, HKIA successfully achieved its target to reduce carbon intensity by 25% between 2010 and 2015, despite a steady increase in air traffic over the years.

•  The AA’s corporate Vision, Mission and Values statements were refined to reinforce a shared vision of the future among staff.

•  The  AA’s Management Trainee programme was enhanced to attract and retain talent, and introduced the Work Improvement Team programme to foster a culture of innovation and empowerment among frontline staff.

•  Smart technologies were introduced and trialed in daily airport operation to improve efficiency, including a Positive Boarding System, self-bag drop system and baggage trolley tracking system.

•  An aviation academy was planned to train home-grown aviation professionals. Recruitment of the first batch of students will start in 2017.

This year’s sustainability report is prepared ”in accordance” with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and the Airport Operators Sector Disclosures: the Core option.  It has also been independently verified by Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency, thereby providing greater transparency and accountability for the AA’s stakeholders.
