Airport e-Security Gates – Privacy Policy Statement


  1. Respecting and protecting our customers' privacy and personal data is very important to Airport Authority, Hong Kong  ("the Authority", "we" or "us"). This Privacy Policy will help you understand how we collect, use and safeguard your personal data in our interactions with you.

  2. Throughout this Privacy Policy, the term "personal data" means any data relating directly or indirectly to you, from which it is practicable for your identity to be directly or indirectly ascertained, and in a form in which access to or processing of the data is practicable.

  3. By opting to use the e-Security Gates or the Assisted Channels to enter the restricted areas at the Hong Kong International Airport ("Airport Restricted Areas"), you agree that we will collect, use and store your personal data in accordance with this Privacy Policy. We will keep your personal data confidential at all times.

  4. We regularly review this Privacy Policy and may from time to time revise it by updating this page. You are advised to visit this page periodically for updates.

  5. This Privacy Policy only applies to the use of e-Security Gates or the Assisted Channels to enter the Airport Restricted Areas but not to any other services provided by the Authority.

Collection of your Personal Data

  1. When you opt to use the e-Security Gates or the Assisted Channels at the Airport, we will collect the following personal data:

    1. Your travel document photograph, your full name, date of birth, gender, nationality and place of birth;
    2. Your name and flight information as recorded in your boarding pass; and
    3. Your live facial features.
  2. If you do not wish your personal data to be collected, you shall use the Assisted Channels and inform the staff of your wish accordingly, in which event only anonymous information (and not personal data) will be collected for statistical analysis as particularly described in paragraph 8 below.

Use of Your Personal Data

  1. We will use the personal data in the following manner to verify your right  of entry to the Airport Restricted Areas:

    1. match the full name shown on the boarding pass with that shown on the travel document;
    2. match the live capture of your facial features with the photograph stored in your travel document;
    3. authenticate the validity of the boarding pass.
  2. We will use the following anonymous information collected to provide statistical information and for analytical purposes so as to improve the standards of the services rendered at the Airport:

    1. Nationality;
    2. Place of birth;
    3. Age group;
    4. Gender;
    5. Month and year of birth; and
    6. Flight information (including date of travel, origin, destination, airline, scheduled departure time, class of travel).

Security and Protection of Your Information

  1. We protect the personal data that you provide to us by reasonable physical, electronic and managerial measures. Please be aware that despite our efforts, no data security measures can guarantee 100% security at all times.

  2. To protect your personal data while using the e-Security Gates or the Assisted Channels, we will encrypt all personal data transmitted to us and throughout the time when we store your personal data into the Airport systems. 

  3. Nothing in this Privacy Policy shall limit any of your rights to the extent such rights cannot be limited by law.

Data Retention

  1. Save for the anonymous information retained pursuant to paragraph 13 below and subject to any legal and regulatory requirements for further extension, all personal data will be deleted from our systems seven (7) days after your flight has departed.

  2. The following anonymous data shall be retained and stored by the Authority for statistical data analysis:

    1. Nationality;
    2. Place of birth;
    3. Age group;
    4. Gender;
    5. Month and year of birth; and
    6. Flight information (including date of travel, origin, destination, airline, scheduled departure time, class of travel).

Disclosure of Your Personal Information

  1. Your personal data held by us will be kept confidential, with the exception that we will disclose your personal data to the following parties:

    1. Authorised personnel of Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO) and the Authority for the handling of security access and controls and incident investigation to safeguard airport security at Airport;
    2. Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (“HKSAR”) Government authorities for the purpose of safeguarding Airport users and aviation security, provided that such HKSAR Government authorities are subject to confidentiality and privacy obligations that are materially similar to those set out in this Privacy Policy;
    3. Any other third party where such disclosure is mandated by relevant HKSAR Government authorities or as may be required by law or a court of law of Hong Kong;
  2. Apart from the above, we do not provide your personal data to any other third parties unless your prior express consent is obtained. We may transfer anonymous and aggregated data to third parties from time to time, which may include your personal data in an anonymous format and which does not allow the third parties to identify you in any way.

How to Check and Update Your Information

  1. You may wish to access, verify or update any of your personal data that we hold. You can do so by contacting our Privacy Officer (see "Our Contact Details" section below).
