Traffic to and from airport severely obstructed by public assembly <br>Airport Authority implements contingency measures to safeguard normal operations of terminal buildings

(HONG KONG, 1 September 2019, 2245hrs) With a view to safeguarding normal operations at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) promptly implemented contingency measures and activated the Airport Emergency Centre around 1300hrs today as protesters began to assemble outside the terminal buildings.

Traffic to and from HKIA was severely obstructed as a result of the assembly. Airport Express service was completely suspended from around 1630hrs to 2230hrs. Blockage of roads connecting to the airport also affected bus service, with only limited service operating. Traffic between the airport and the city gradually resumed to normal in early evening. The AA has been working with relevant organisations to maintain flight operations to their best ability in order to clear the backlog of passengers. A total of 25 passengers flights were cancelled after 1300hrs today.

The AA condemns actions that blocked some entrances and exits to the terminals, obstructed traffic to the airport which affected passengers’ journeys, and damaged some airport equipment.

The AA issued several warnings to protesters indicating that their actions had breached the interim injunction order (the Order), and worked with the Police on the execution of the Order and the dispersal operation. The AA will also work with the Police on the investigation into the incidents today.

The AA reiterates that the High Court has ordered the continuation of the Order obtained by the AA on 13 August 2019, which restrains persons from unlawfully and wilfully obstructing or interfering with the proper use of HKIA. Persons are also restrained by the Order from attending or participating in any demonstration or protest or public order event in the Airport other than strictly in compliance with the Order.
