HKIA Career Expo 2015 Features Thousands of Job Opportunities and Miniature Airport on Display

(HONG KONG, 5 June 2015)  –  To facilitate the continuous growth of the local aviation industry, the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) and the Labour Department have joined hands for the fourth year to launch the "Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Career Expo 2015" today. The three-day event is being held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, providing thousands of job opportunities for those aspiring to develop a career in the industry.

The opening ceremony of the Expo was officiated by Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Secretary for Transport and Housing; Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, Secretary for Labour and Welfare; and Jack So Chak-kwong, Chairman of the AA.

Speaking at the event, Professor Anthony Cheung remarked that Hong Kong should move forward to maintain its status and competitiveness as the international aviation hub, and the Government supports the construction of Three-runway System (3RS) at HKIA without delay. Other than enhancing the hardware, software including manpower resources is also vital to spur growth. The Government places high value on nurturing talents in the aviation industry. It has established the HK$100-million Maritime and Aviation Training Fund, and is studying the plan of setting up a civil aviation training institute to support and enhance talent training.

Professor Cheung said, “I wish the participating organisations from the aviation industry and airport-related businesses good luck in finding their right talents at the Career Expo. I also encourage those who are keen to join the industry, especially the young people, to lift their limitation and explore every possibility in building a career at HKIA. ‘Sky is the limit.’ What a career in the aviation industry can offer may be far beyond your imagination. ”

Mr Matthew Cheung said, "There are currently over 65,000 directly employed staff in HKIA, including jobs of aviation services, cargo, catering, retail and other supporting services. In that, there are huge demand for talents on service personnel, technical jobs and professional positions. I deeply believe that there will be bright prospects in the development of aviation and related industries in Hong Kong. Job seekers can take the chances offered in this Career Expo to find their preferred jobs.”

Mr Fred Lam, CEO of AA, said, “A huge amount of talent is needed to sustain the continuous development of Hong Kong’s aviation industry. It is estimated that 123,000 direct jobs will be created upon commencement of the 3RS at HKIA. Our airport is where Hong Kong people, and especially our younger generation, can realise their true potential. I hope job seekers will seize this opportunity to spread their wings in pursuit of their careers.”

This year, the exhibition area of the Expo showcases a miniature airport replicating the operational environment at HKIA with some airport facility models and aircraft parts. Through the simulated Integrated Airport Centre, runway and baggage handling system, visitors can understand the behind-the-scenes operations and advanced technologies adopted by one of the world’s busiest airports. The realistically crafted and meticulous settings like a virtual airport provide a picture-perfect backdrop, enhanced by displays of genuine aircraft parts, including an aircraft wheel and an engine of a Boeing 777 aircraft.

The Expo features thousands of job opportunities offered by more than 40 companies representing the airport and aviation community. Vacancies encompass roles in inflight services, aircraft maintenance, airfreight, airport security, baggage delivery, retail, technical services, mechanical engineering, catering and more.

In addition to onsite interviews, the Expo will also host free career talks and seminars for job seekers and the public, providing the latest industry news and useful tips on technology, aircraft safety, interview techniques, workplace etiquette and more. As the supporting organisation, the Aircraft Division of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers will provide seminars and educational resources on airworthiness, cabin equipment and other industry updates regarding aircraft engineering.
