HKIA Records Steady Traffic Growth in April

(HONG KONG, 21 May 2017)  –  Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw steady growth in all three air traffic categories in April 2017. During the month, the airport handled 6.3 million passengers, registering year-on-year growth of 6%. Cargo volume and flight movements increased 8.9% and 3.1% to 398,000 tonnes and 34,740, respectively, compared to the same month last year.

Hong Kong residents’ travel, which recorded a tremendous 38% growth in April, was the main driver of the passenger growth. Passenger traffic to and from Japan recorded the most significant increases.

The continuing strong growth in cargo was largely attributed to a 14% year-on-year growth in exports. Amongst the key trading regions, North America and Europe increased most significantly in the month.

Combining March and April to even out the seasonal impact of the Easter holidays, passenger volume, cargo tonnage, and flight movements showed year-on-year growth of 1.9%, 13.4% and 1.8%, respectively.

Meanwhile, HKIA has again been recognised with awards in green and technology aspects. HKIA received a Silver Recognition in the “Airports with 25 million passengers per annum and above” category of the ACI Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2017. The accolade cited HKIA’s energy management programme as a key factor contributing to the airport’s success in surpassing its target with 25.6% reduction in carbon intensity by 2015.

Additionally, the Automated Airfield Ground Lighting Scanning and Inspection System (AGLSIS), which makes use of the high-speed camera technology to facilitate fast, automated checking of the health of airfield and runway ground lighting, received the Bronze Award in the Best Smart Hong Kong Award (Open Data / Big Data Application) of the Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Awards 2017. The AGLSIS project was also named Champion of the Hong Kong Electronics Project Competition 2017, organised by the Electronics Division of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers.

C K Ng, Executive Director, Airport Operations, Airport Authority Hong Kong said, “It is our great pleasure to receive these prestigious awards, which recognise our efforts in managing HKIA as one of the world’s greenest airports – as well as applying smart technologies to enhance operational efficiency. We will continue to bolster technological and environmental performance to bring greater convenience to passengers.”

During the first four months of 2017, HKIA handled 23.9 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo – up 1.4% and 10.9%, respectively, from the same period last year, and flight movements decreased by 0.1% to 136,540.

On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo tonnage registered a year-on-year increase of 7.3%, amounting to 4.7 million tonnes. Passenger traffic rose 1.5% to 70.8 million, while flight movements registered a 0.4% increase to 411,485.
