HKIA Recognises Airport Tenants' Commitment to Environmental Excellence
(HONG KONG, 31 August 2012) – To acknowledge the environmental achievements exemplified by the tenants of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), Airport Authority Hong Kong (the AA) today held the first-ever HKIA Environmental Responsible Retail Recognition Scheme award ceremony. Fifty retail shops and 23 restaurants received trophies for their environmentally friendly initiatives.
Organised by the AA, the scheme is supported by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and Green Power to recognise shops and restaurants that take practical steps to reduce the use of energy, minimise waste and separate recyclables.
Enrollment in the scheme is open to over 300 retail shops and restaurants operating at the airport. Following a preliminary assessment where applicants answered a questionnaire and provided detailed supporting data, a judging panel comprising representatives from the AA, the EPD and Green Power visited all the facilities of eligible candidates and interviewed their representatives to verify all submitted information. Gold, silver and bronze trophies were awarded to companies that demonstrated environmental excellence.
Winners exemplified best green practices in retail and catering operations, based on the "three Rs" of environmental protection: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Examples included in-store lighting being replaced with energy-efficient LED lights; variable settings for lightings and air-conditioning systems for different operating hours; producing shopping bags for customers with recycled plastic materials; and using reusable containers and wrapping nets for delivering goods rather than disposable containers and plastic wrapping sheets. Winners also helped promote green practices through training and community programmes for staff.
Wilson Fung Wing-yip, Executive Director, Corporate Development of the AA, Dr Lawrence Wong, Principal Environmental Protection Officer of the Environmental Protection Department, and Dr Man Chi-sum, Chief Executive Officer of Green Power, attended today's ceremony.
Mr Fung congratulated all the awardees and entrants for their commendable green efforts. "Companies participating in the scheme have placed environmental responsibility in their business agenda. We hope this newly established award programme will not only celebrate their successful efforts in improving their own environmental performance and advancing Hong Kong's sustainable development, but will also encourage others to do the same in the future.
"We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the EPD and Green Power for their support and guidance during the development of the scheme. Looking ahead, we will continue to advocate environmental protection amongst our business partners in striving towards our goal of making HKIA the greenest airport in the world," he added.
The scheme will be hosted once every two years with an aim to promote airport tenants' commitment to environmental excellence. In future schemes, the AA will enhance the existing criteria, as well as include new elements to catch up with the latest industry trends and green expectations.
