Greening and cleaning

Volunteers from the AA took part in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) 2010 for the third consecutive year on 30 October 2010. They helped collect rubbish and debris littered on the beach at Sha Lo Wan, one of the closest beaches to HKIA.

To protect our marine environment, HKIA joined hands with Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Hong Kong Wetland Park, Ngong Ping 360, the Tung Chung Safe and Healthy City and Islands District Office to clean the Tung Chung mangroves in June 2009.

HKIA supported the creation of a 12-hectare mangrove habitat in Tai O. About 90,000 mangrove seedlings were planted in 2005 and 2006, increasing the diversity of inter-tidal flora and fauna in the area. We also planted 350,000 seedlings on the hill slopes of Tung Chung hill to welcome passengers with more greenery.

Using food compost collected from kitchens in the airport, we worked with Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Tung Chung Integrated Services to teach students in Tung Chung about organic planting.
