Business aviation, in general, refers to the own exclusive use of aircraft or helicopter by any company, government or persons for the transportation of people. This is an upmarket segment in aviation and is one of the fastest growing businesses in HKIA. From 2000 to 2007, the number of business aviation aircraft movement has increased from 981 to 3,633, representing a compounded growth rate of 20.6% per annum.
The business aviation centre at HKIA is franchised to . With HK$80 million investment, the business aviation centre occupies a total area of 5,535 sq.m. It has an elegant executive terminal building which is equipped with customer lounge, pilot lounge, flight planning, flight operation and accommodation for customs and immigration, and a hangar capable of accommodating 4 to 6 private jets simultaneously. There is a dedicated apron of 27,000 sq.m. area to faciliate the handling of business aviation aircraft.
HKBAC provides a full range of quality service, including ground handling, passenger handling, flight planning, line maintenance, fuelling, etc., to customers with a high degree of flexibility, security and privacy. Customs and excise and immigration services are also provided on site to facilitate efficient movement of passengers. The service of HKBAC is well-received and highly appraised by the customers. In 2003, 2005 and 2006 HKBAC was selected by Professional Pilot Magazine as the best Fixed Base Operator in the Asia and Middle East region.
To sustain the position of HKIA as a centre for business aviation and meet the increasing demand on business aviation in the local market, the Authority has entered into agreement with HKBAC for the development of thesecond hangar. Built on a 4,500 sq.m. site, thesecond hangar is about two times larger than thefirst hangar, and capable to accommodate larger business aircraft such as Boeing Business Jet and Airbus Corporate Jet. Total investment on thesecond hangar is about HK$100 million and it commenced operation on 3 September 2007. To facilitate the development of business aviation business in HKIA, the Authority has invested HK$80 million to expand the business aviation apron in phases to ensure the efficient and effective taxing, and to provide additional parking area for business jet. The whole expansion work is scheduled to be completed by end 2008.
