Micro Carbon Operation

About the project

Micro Carbon Operation is a consumer-focused campaign which strives to promote and develop low carbon awareness in Hong Kong by fostering environmental engagement at community level and on social media networks.

Running from January to October 2013, the Micro Carbon Operation successfully motivated the public to adopt a low carbon lifestyle through workshops, seminars, social media and a campaign website with the goal to achieve a more sustainable future in Hong Kong. It was also supported by the Environmental Bureau of the HKSAR Government, Hong Kong Observatory, and around 60 environmental and civic groups.

The Micro Carbon Photo-Blogging Contest held on social media platform called for submission of photos and insights on low carbon actions in daily lives. A total of 157 entries were received at the blogging contest.

Alongside the Photo-Blogging Contest, Micro Carbon Operation also featured a series of low carbon lifestyle workshops, focusing on the four core aspects of modern living: clothing, eating, living and travelling. The workshops included an old clothes upcycling workshop, simple living day camp, food waste recycling tour plus green dinner, and "micro carbon" meadow music concert. Over 500 participants joined the workshops.

An online app "Carbon Crush" was launched in May 2013 to engage the public in a more sustainable behaviour. The app promoted ‘micro-carbon living’ by providing players with advice on how to reduce their personal emissions, minimise pollution and reduce waste through the game.
