Airport Authority Welcomes Government’s Support to Aerotropolis Development

2018/10/10

(HONG KONG, 10 October 2018) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) welcomes the Government’s support to the development of an Aerotropolis at Lantau, as announced in the Policy Address today.

With a vision to turn Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) from being a “city’s airport” to an Airport City, the AA has been implementing in recent years a series of strategic projects which will further integrate the airport’s development with the broader regional economic activities, in particular those of Lantau Island.

“Our Airport City strategy complements the Government’s overall planning for Lantau, which will generate enormous synergy and further consolidate Hong Kong’s position as an international aviation hub and the major business centre in the Greater Bay Area,” said Jack So Chak-kwong, Chairman of the AA.

Projects that form the crucial parts of the AA’s Airport City strategy include the Three-runway System, which will enable HKIA to serve 100 million passengers and handle nine million tonnes of cargo a year; and SKYCITY, set to be the largest commercial development in Hong Kong and a new regional destination comprising entertainment, retail and dining facilities, as well as hotels and offices. The AA will also study the future development of AsiaWorld-Expo, with a view to fully realising the potential synergy between SKYCITY and AsiaWorld-Expo.

Another key driver of the Airport City strategy is the premium logistics centre which will capture the opportunities arising from the exponential growth of e-commerce and consolidate the global cargo leadership of HKIA.

The AA also welcomes the Government’s invitation to submit a proposal for the topside development at Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB). The AA will do a detailed study after receiving the formal invitation.

Meanwhile, the AA is glad to note the $200 million injection into the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund. The initiative will help nurture young talent and also fulfill the training needs of professionals for the fast expanding aviation industry, both of which are the declared mission of the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy established by the AA in 2017.
