(HONG KONG, 28 September 2017) – More than 80 students are starting 12-month internships at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) after completing a course at the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy (the Academy) aimed at nurturing young people for careers in the aviation industry.

The “Certificate Course in Airport Services and Operations” is a collaboration between the Academy and the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the University of Hong Kong (HKU SPACE). The four-week course consists of lectures, site visits and sharing by industry experts, followed by jobs matching and placements arranged by the Academy. On completion, graduates receive a certificate from HKU SPACE equivalent to Level 3 of the Qualification Framework.

A ceremony was held today at the airport to mark the completion of the coursework for the programme’s first batch of students and the commencement of internships. Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Jack So, Chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA); Frank Chan, Secretary for Transport and Housing; Andrew Fung and S S Lee, Board Members of the AA; Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of the AA; Vivian Cheung, President of the Academy and Professor William Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, officiated at the ceremony. They were joined by representatives from the 15 airport business partners who offer placement opportunities, and parents of the students.

Mr So said, “The 12-month internships with full salary at companies around the airport make this course a unique one in Hong Kong. The Academy helps match students with jobs in the fields of ground services, aircraft maintenance, catering services and airport cargo, among others. With the continuous development at the airport and the aviation industry, the demand for talent will continue to be huge. We believe this kind of programmes will attract more young people to develop their careers at the airport.”

Mrs Lam said she appreciated the efforts AA and the Academy put into nurturing talent for the aviation industry. She expressed gratitude to the airport’s business partners for their active participation in providing valuable internships for students to unleash their potential. Mrs Lam said she sincerely hoped that the students would grasp this opportunity to put their knowledge into use and strive to achieve excellence.

Established and managed by the AA, the Academy is Hong Kong’s first civil aviation academy. By partnering with local and overseas educational bodies, vocational training institutions and industry practitioners, the Academy offers a wide range of courses, including beginners’ programmes for new joiners, professional development and technical training programmes for practitioners, summer day camps and placements for students, as well as professional certificate courses and advanced programmes. The Academy first rolled out courses in April 2017, and expects to enroll 3,000 students by the end of the year.
